THE HOLY CHILDHOOD | Jesus conceived
Ain Karem | Virgin Mary visits Elisabeth
Return to Nazareth | |||||||||
Bethlehem | Jesus born | Any confusion about the census of Quirinius is dealt with here and here - it does not require any stretching to accept that Luke is accurate. The apographe that he speaks of is not the apotimesis of 6AD when Quirinius gathered taxes and there was rioting, which Jews and gentiles would both remember, and an apographe has to occur first in order to gather the taxes later.
Bethlehem | Circumcision and naming | Not recorded. At eight days after birth, they surely are still close to Bethlehem. The Holy Family would have quickly vacated the cattle grotto (these still exist in Bethlehem), since Joseph would have time to find somewhere better and people would leave the area once they had been recorded in the census. Mary has family nearby, probably Joseph too. They surely would not have gone far from Bethlehem or Jerusalem with a newborn, knowing that at 40 days they would have to present Him at the Temple.
1 | Jerusalem | Presentation at the temple | 2:22-38 | Note that Luke alone is recording this, consistent with him taking witness from the Virgin Mary.
2 | Jerusalem | Visit of the Magi | The Magi went south from Jerusalem, if the precession of Jupiter is assumed, which is the only good explanation for ‘follow the star’. If the Magi visited much later, then the Holy Family is in Nazareth. The Magi are also told not to return to Jerusalem, which presumably means they realise Herod is dangerous. I wonder if they tell the Holy Family? It seems that Herod’s edict comes somewhat later, when he realises the Magi are not coming back. Sheen, referencing Suetonius, states that this edict to kill the first-born was across the Roman Empire in response to a widespread expectation that a great king would be born, and only enacted by Herod [Sheen, Life of Christ].
Nazareth | Early infancy
3 | Egypt | The flight into Egypt - there until Herod’s end | 2:13-18
4 | Nazareth | Grew in body, mind and spirit | 2:19-23 | 2:39-40 | Herod the Great dies in 4 BC.
5 | Jerusalem Temple | Christ Child in the Temple | 2:41-50 | Jesus is aged 12, the age of reason or adulthood, and it is Passover. The Holy Family returns to Nazareth where Jesus is obedient to his parents. Again Luke is recording this, consistent with him taking witness from the Virgin Mary.
6 | Nazareth | Worked in Joseph’s carpentry | 6:3 | 2:51-52

8 | Jericho wilderness | Temptation of hunger | 4:1-4 | 1:10-12 | 4:1-4 | I was surprised to see the three temptations separated in Mathesy’s table. I imagined these happening while Jesus is in the cave of Quarantania and His placement precariously at the Temple was some vision or spiritual experience perhaps. To support a wider interpretation of this period of forty days, Shuzako Endo supposes that Jesus is in contact with the Essenes who inhabit the area near Quarantania. Later, Jesus points the disciples to a man bearing a water jug in Mark 14:3 and Luke 22:10, which is well supposed to be a woman’s task of the early morning - except for the Essenes, says Endo. I have found reference to Bargil Pixner, author of Paths of the Messiah, who discovered the Essene Gate near the SW corner of the city wall (hence the Essene Gate which allowed them to access the latrines in the valley - Deuteronomy 23:12-14). He supports that the Essenes numbered very few women. The Essene Community had in their writings a "Messianic Meal”. James Tabor suggests that the man was carrying water from the Pool of Siloam into the Essene quarter and this was a way of identifying the pre-arranged ‘Upper Room’, if it was an Essene building. However I note that Tabor also holds to the early Last Supper interpretation which Jimmy Akin strongly holds is unnecessary and Tabor refers to ‘artos’ as leavened bread, when it may also refer to unleavened; and Jesus clearly says ‘prepare a Passover meal’ which to my mind has to include unleavened bread. 11 | Bethany beyond the Jordan | The great announcement | 1:19-51 | Mathesy uses the longstanding name of ‘Bethabara’ adopted by Origen who couldn’t find a ‘Bethany beyond the Jordan’, and this name stuck beyond the KJV. Yet the text says ‘Bethany beyond the Jordan’. Openbible states that this is now most likely thought to be west of the Jordan and at the same latitude as Galilee, rather than south at the location Al-Maghtas where the Baptism of Jesus is commonly venerated now. Expositors and exegetes reproduced at Biblehub tend towards a location nearer Galilee, though not unanimously. From my limited research, John 3:23 puts John the Baptist in the southern reaches of the Jordan later on, because there was plenty of water there, implying his original area of ministry had dried up. It would be fitting for him to have to move nearer to Jerusalem after having established an unassailable reputation. John was a ‘voice crying out in the wilderness’, though this may not bear on any baptismal location if he was west of Jerusalem, as Tissot quotes others, in terms of John coming of age and learning to live in the desert. For baptism, though, the early mentions of Jesus and the disciples imply they are near Galilee, so it seems more natural to me to put John first in the wilderness west of the Sea of Galilee, and then later in the south near the Jordan. Andrew, on observing Jesus, In John 1:40, Andrew and John the Evangelist hear John the Baptist name Jesus, and they follow Jesus and meet with Him. Andrew ‘first’ finds his brother Simon (Peter) to introduce him to Jesus, and ‘the following day’ (John 1:43) Jesus goes into Galilee and finds Philip, presumably somewhere near Bethsaida since Andrew, Simon and Philip are all from there (John 1:44). It seems implausible that Al-Maghtas, which is 100 metres from the Jordan but 100 km south of the Lake of Galilee, would naturally be called ‘Bethany beyond the Jordan’, though it is east of the other Bethany near Jerusalem. That is my position so far, and the evidence is mixed.
